The Amrutesvara temple, also known as Amruteshvara or Amruteshwara Temple is located in Amruthapura. It is 67 kilometers from Chikmagalur, near the Bhadra River reservoir. It is a 12th-century temple that captures the essence of South Indian temple architecture and attracts tourists from across the country.
Lord Shiva in his Linga form is the temple's presiding deity. Though the temple appears to be small, it holds a lot of wonderful things for visitors. The beautiful architecture of this temple makes it one of the most remarkable hallmarks of Hoysala architecture.
Architecture of Amrutesvara Temple
The stunning edifice of the temple is built of black soapstone and features circular carvings on the outside walls. There is a solitary tower and a huge open mandap in the sanctum. The main sanctum is square and decorated with demon sculptures. Carvings from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata are shown in floral motifs on the ceilings and panels.
It has an Ekakuta-style vimana (shrine), a wide-open mandapa (hall), and a closed mandapa (hall) that links to an open hall. The open mandapa is made up of 140 panels depicting Hindu mythological tales. The porch, Garbhagriha, Sukhanasi, and Navaranga are the earliest elements of the temple.
Over the years, numerous modifications and embellishments were done throughout time. Beautiful pillars support the majestic architecture of the temple. The emblem of Hoysalas Sala fighting a lion also adorns the temple towers, while the panel on the sukhanasi tower portrays Shiva defeating Gajasura.
History of Amrutesvara Temple
The temple was named after commander Amruteshwara Dandanayaka, who constructed it in 1196 C.E. during the reign of King Hoysala Veera Ballala II. The design philosophy initiated during that period has impacted the architecture of the state to date. Mallitama was one of the prominent sculptors of those times. It is referred to as the Golden Architectural Era to date.
